2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC400 Electric: Bold Design, Smooth Performance

5

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its all-electric GLC400 4Matic, a model that blends striking aesthetics with cutting-edge EV technology. The vehicle’s most notable feature is its oversized grille—an unapologetic design choice for an electric vehicle that doesn’t functionally need one. This design element isn’t just for show; the grille houses an available matrix of LED lights that illuminate in a startup sequence, paying homage to the classic 1959 Mercedes-Benz W111.

Refined Exterior, Spacious Interior

Beyond the grille, the GLC400 Electric boasts a sleek profile with three-pointed DRL headlights and subtle power bulges on the hood. The body is 5.0 inches longer than its gas-powered counterpart, with a 3.9-inch increase in the wheelbase, resulting in significantly more passenger space—even exceeding that of the standard GLC SUV despite being only 0.1 inch taller. The standard glass panoramic roof further enhances the sense of spaciousness.

Battery and Performance

The GLC400 Electric features a 94 kWh usable battery pack comprised of flat lithium-ion NMC cells. The 800-volt system enables rapid charging, with the ability to go from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes at up to 330 kilowatts. The vehicle will support both NACS and CCS charging standards with the appropriate adapter. Mercedes estimates a WLTP range of 715 kilometers (approximately 380 miles EPA), though official EPA figures are pending.

Power comes from dual permanent-magnet electric motors, producing a combined 483 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. The GLC400 accelerates to 60 mph in a claimed 4.2 seconds. The rear motor (402 hp, 369 lb-ft) drives through a two-speed gearbox for optimized efficiency at higher speeds, while the front motor (215 hp, 221 lb-ft) engages in less than a quarter-second when in Sport mode.

Comfort and Technology

The optional Agility & Comfort package adds an air-spring suspension, adaptive dampers, and rear-axle steering. The car can also communicate with other Mercedes vehicles via car-to-X technology, adjusting damping settings based on real-time road conditions reported by other cars. In testing, the ride quality was described as smooth and supple, though the difference between Comfort and Sport modes was subtle.

Inside, the GLC400 Electric offers luxurious materials including nappa leather, open-pore wood, and carbon fiber. Buyers can opt for a fully vegan interior certified by the Vegan Society, ensuring all materials, including adhesives and dyes, meet strict standards. The optional 39.1-inch Hyperscreen stretches across the cabin, integrating instrumentation, infotainment, and passenger displays into a single seamless surface.

The MB.OS artificial intelligence operating system powers the vehicle’s voice controls, offering intuitive interaction and personalized features. For instance, the system can recognize whether the driver or passenger is speaking and will adjust settings accordingly. It can even dim the passenger screen if the driver glances over, reminding them to focus on the road.

The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC400 4Matic Electric is slated for release in the U.S. in the second half of this year, with an estimated price around $63,000. A rear-wheel-drive version will follow at a later date. The vehicle’s bold design and advanced technology make it a compelling contender in the growing electric SUV market.
