BMW has confirmed that the 4 Series will continue as a distinct model line under the “Neue Klasse” platform, offering a sharper, more dynamic alternative to the upcoming 3 Series. This means buyers can expect a future lineup that includes petrol, electric, and high-performance M4 variants.
The 4 Series’ Role in BMW’s Strategy
Launched in 2013, the 4 Series has always been positioned as a more stylish, niche offering compared to the mainstream 3 Series. It provides coupe, convertible, and fastback (Gran Coupe) body styles—options that appeal to a different segment of buyers.
The future of the 4 Series had been in question as the 3 Series transitions to its next generation with a dedicated EV option. This could have weakened the business case for BMW’s electric alternative, the i4. However, Joachim Post, the head of engineering and development at BMW, has clarified that the 4 Series remains a critical part of the company’s lineup.
“The 4 Series is an important car for us. It’s more sporty, and BMW is a sporty brand with a clear heritage on the performance side. It will play an important role also for the future,” Post stated.
Leveraging Synergies and Reduced Costs
BMW is taking advantage of the Neue Klasse platform to streamline development costs. Post explained that creating 4 Series derivatives is relatively inexpensive because they can be built using shared components and engineering with the 3 Series and other models.
This approach makes the 4 Series’ continued existence commercially viable, even if it doesn’t achieve the same sales volumes as its mainstream sibling. The company has also noticed an opportunity as rivals pull back from the coupe and fastback segments.
Next-Generation X4 and X6 Plans
The strategy isn’t limited to the 4 Series. BMW is preparing to launch a new X4 with both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrains, mirroring the X3 and iX3. The larger X6 is also expected to return, following the same shared-platform approach.
In summary: BMW is doubling down on its more stylish and performance-focused models by continuing the 4 Series under the Neue Klasse platform. This strategy leverages engineering synergies and fills gaps left by competitors, ensuring that BMW maintains its presence in the coupe and fastback segments while also electrifying its lineup.
