E30 BMW 325i: A Return to Analog Driving

11

The BMW 3 Series turned 50 this year. One enthusiast celebrated by purchasing a 1990 E30 325i Touring – a move that reflects a growing trend of drivers seeking simpler, more engaging cars.

After selling a Porsche 944, the owner wanted another older vehicle: something fun, light, and mechanically straightforward. The E30 325i fit perfectly. It’s narrower than today’s Mini Cooper yet offers a rear-wheel drive layout and a manual transmission. This blend of simplicity and usability is rare in modern cars.

The appeal is clear: the E30 provides a more direct driving experience without sacrificing comfort entirely, making it suitable for daily use or longer trips. For many, the E30 also represents nostalgia; the author grew up around the 3 Series, with their family owning a 320i and their first car being a 316i Touring.

This particular model came with desirable upgrades like a limited-slip differential and Bilstein dampers. Despite rising prices for E30s, this one cost less than a new Renault Clio – a testament to the enduring appeal of well-maintained classics.

The reality of owning a 35-year-old car is that wear and tear are inevitable. Even with relatively low mileage (91,000), rust and component fatigue are likely. Thorough inspections by specialists are essential, but some unknowns remain.

The E30 325i represents a sweet spot for enthusiasts: a balance between mechanical purity and everyday usability. It’s a reminder that driving doesn’t need to be complicated to be rewarding.
