Cupra Born Receives Major Update: Styling, Range, and Usability Improved

5

Cupra has significantly revamped its all-electric Born hatchback with a host of improvements including sharper styling, increased range across all models, and a long-requested return to physical buttons in the cabin. The changes bring the Born into closer alignment with Cupra’s broader lineup, addressing criticisms of the original’s touch-heavy interior and limited usability.

Exterior Refresh

The facelifted Born adopts a more aggressive front end, mirroring the design language of the Leon, Formentor, and Tavascan. Key changes include distinctive polygonal headlight graphics, a more pronounced “shark-nose” fascia, and a full-width rear light bar.
Available wheel options have also been expanded, with new 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels now fitted with wider 235mm tires. Cupra claims this improves handling dynamics.

Interior Overhaul: Buttons Return

Perhaps the most significant update is the interior. The original Born was criticized for its reliance on haptic touch controls, which many drivers found distracting and imprecise. The new model ditches those in favor of traditional physical buttons on the steering wheel.
The digital instrument cluster has been upsized from 5.3 inches to a more prominent 10.25-inch display, while interior materials have been upgraded with suede door panels and soft-touch plastics on the door tops. Rear passengers now benefit from an added air vent in the center console.
Cupra has also integrated a digital key app, allowing owners to unlock and start the car via smartphone.

Powertrain Tweaks and Range Boosts

The Born’s powertrain options have been refined to deliver increased range without compromising performance. The entry-level model retains its 58 kWh battery but now produces 187 bhp (down from 201 bhp), resulting in a range increase from 264 to 280 miles. Peak charging rates have also been raised from 120 kW to 135 kW.

The long-range version, using a 79 kWh battery and 228 bhp motor, sees its range jump from 346 miles to 372 miles, with charging speeds increasing from 135 kW to 185 kW. The high-performance VZ variant, with its 322 bhp motor, also benefits from the improved range and faster charging capabilities.
Both 79 kWh versions gain a one-pedal driving mode and launch control for enhanced driving experience.

Pricing and Availability

Cupra has not yet confirmed final pricing, but expects a slight increase over the current Born model. The existing Born starts at £35,690, rising to £36,995 for the long-range version and £44,820 for the VZ. The updates address key complaints about the original model, making the Born a more competitive EV in its segment.

The Born’s improvements demonstrate Cupra’s commitment to refining its electric offerings based on customer feedback and real-world usability. These changes make the Born a more practical and appealing option for buyers considering a mid-size electric hatchback.
