DS Automobiles has revealed its next-generation No7 SUV, a model poised to redefine the mid-size luxury segment by offering both cutting-edge electric powertrains and a conventional hybrid option. This strategic move acknowledges that not all consumers are ready for a full transition to electric vehicles, addressing a key market reality.
Balancing Electric Ambition with Practicality
The No7 shares design cues with the flagship No8, featuring a striking illuminated grille and two-tone hood, but diverges by including a 143bhp hybrid engine alongside its all-electric variants. DS product director Audrey Amar emphasized that “for family cars, you need a mild hybrid—not all customers are ready to switch to full electric.” This decision reflects a growing trend within the automotive industry where brands are adapting to consumer demand by offering a wider range of powertrain options.
The hybrid configuration pairs a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with a 28bhp electric motor, achieving up to 53mpg and CO2 emissions between 119–128g/km. These figures position the No7 competitively against premium rivals, emphasizing efficiency as a core brand value.
Performance and Range: Electric and Hybrid Options
The No7 will be available in multiple configurations, including long-range electric models capable of traveling up to 465 miles on a single charge. Battery options include 97.2kWh and 73.7kWh, ensuring minimal range sacrifice compared to the sleeker No8. Shorter-range versions deliver up to 337 miles, while all-wheel-drive variants achieve 422 miles (though acceleration from 0-62mph in 5.4 seconds may reduce range).
Charging capabilities include 160kW DC fast charging, providing a 20-80% charge in 27 minutes for long-range models. Three-stage regenerative braking further enhances efficiency.
Interior and Exterior Aesthetics
The No7 is slightly shorter than the No8 (4.66 meters) but longer than its predecessor, offering increased rear passenger space. The interior design is a standout feature, boasting wooden and embossed aluminum accents, mood lighting, and gold detailing. DS design director Thierry Métroz described the aim as creating “first-class comfort,” incorporating features like road-scanning adaptive suspension, neck warmers, and double-glazed glass for enhanced refinement.
Exterior design elements include signature V-shaped Daytime Running Lights and an illuminated grille on electric versions. The hybrid model prioritizes engine ventilation over the illuminated grille feature.
Market Positioning and Pricing
DS anticipates the No7 will bolster brand awareness, building on the success of the original DS7 (now slightly renamed). The model is expected to go on sale this autumn, with pricing starting around £40,000 for the hybrid version. This launch signifies DS’s commitment to expanding its product lineup and solidifying its position as a premium automotive brand.
The No7 represents a pragmatic approach to luxury mobility, acknowledging that not all consumers are ready to fully embrace electric vehicles while still offering cutting-edge design and technology.
