Ferrari Unveils Amalfi Spider: Open-Top Luxury for the Summer Season

16

Ferrari has launched the Amalfi Spider, the convertible version of its latest sports car model, designed to capitalize on warmer weather. The move comes nearly a year after the coupé’s debut, and the open-top variant retains the elegant proportions while offering high performance.

Design and Aerodynamics

The Amalfi Spider’s design preserves the coupé’s silhouette, with an emphasis on muscular rear styling and an active spoiler that generates 110kg of downforce – a notable improvement over its predecessor. The roof now extends onto the rear deck, enhancing the car’s overall look. Ferrari’s designers have prioritized maintaining the original car’s aesthetic, avoiding the ungainly proportions sometimes seen in convertible models.

Performance and Powertrain

Under the hood, the Spider features a twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8 engine producing 631bhp, an increase of 19bhp over the Roma Spider. Ferrari claims improved throttle response and torque delivery across the rev range. The car reaches 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds, with a top speed of 199mph. While slightly less powerful than competitors like the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster (656bhp) and Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet (701bhp), it maintains competitive performance.

Chassis and Weight

To counter the rigidity loss typical in convertibles, Ferrari has reinforced the chassis, resulting in an 86kg weight increase to 1,556kg (dry). Despite this, it remains lighter than the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster. The ‘Z-fold’ roof mechanism operates in 13.5 seconds at speeds up to 37mph, folding into a compact 220mm package to maximize trunk space.

Comfort and Technology

The Amalfi Spider includes a wind deflector behind the rear seats, activated at speeds up to 93mph, to reduce cabin buffeting. The five-layer fabric roof is designed for soundproofing and heat insulation comparable to hard-top models. Buyers can choose from four tailor-made fabric colors and two technical options, including a shimmering Tecnico Ottanio hue.

Interior and Controls

Inside, the Spider features physical buttons on the steering wheel, including a prominent start button, and the manettino switch for traction control modes (Wet, Comfort, Sport, Race, ESC-Off). The cockpit includes a 15.6-inch instrument display, a 10.25-inch central touchscreen, and an optional 8.8-inch passenger display for G-force and rev-counter data. The lower center console creates a more cocooned driving experience.

Pricing and Availability

With the standard Amalfi priced above £200,000, the Spider variant is expected to cost around £210,000. This places it firmly in the luxury sports car market, where buyers seek both performance and exclusivity.

The Ferrari Amalfi Spider represents a continuation of the brand’s commitment to blending high-performance engineering with elegant design. The convertible variant offers a compelling option for drivers seeking open-top luxury without compromising on speed or handling.
