Ford is aggressively expanding its Raptor sub-brand beyond the Ranger, Bronco, and F-150, with the stated goal of becoming “the Porsche of off-road” vehicles. This move reflects a growing market for high-performance off-roaders, where Ford seeks to establish itself as the undisputed leader.
Raptor’s Growth Strategy
Currently, the Ranger Raptor is the only Raptor model sold in Australia, consistently accounting for 15% of Ranger sales over the past three years. This success demonstrates clear demand for the Raptor’s unique blend of power and off-road capability.
Ford intends to capitalize on this demand by introducing new Raptor variants across its product lineup, starting with models that align with the brand’s hardcore DNA. The company’s general manager of Ford Racing, Will Ford, emphasized the need for “thoughtful expansion,” ensuring new models maintain the Raptor’s signature identity while attracting new customers.
Potential New Models
Several vehicles are rumored to receive the Raptor treatment. The most talked-about prospect is a high-performance off-road Mustang, potentially powered by the Mustang Dark Horse’s 373kW V8 engine and featuring all-wheel drive. This model, if realized, would position Ford alongside Porsche and Lamborghini, which have previously released off-road variants of their sports cars.
Other contenders include the Expedition SUV (the SUV version of the F-150), which would leverage existing engineering from the F-150 Raptor, and potentially even an Everest Raptor, though Ford has previously hesitated on this model. An all-electric Mustang Mach-E Rally has already been introduced in some markets, demonstrating Ford’s willingness to explore electrified off-road options.
Maintaining Raptor’s Identity
Ford is committed to preserving the Raptor’s core identity. Executives stress that the brand will not dilute its focus on extreme off-road performance. Instead, new variants will be carefully selected to complement the existing lineup and appeal to enthusiasts.
CEO Jim Farley has also hinted at limited-edition models inspired by Ford’s racing efforts, such as a potential “Raptor Dakar” edition. This strategy would further solidify the Raptor’s image as a high-performance, off-road-focused brand.
