Geely Auto Australia has officially announced its expansion into the hatchback market with the upcoming release of its first non-SUV model: a compact, all-electric vehicle scheduled for launch in the second half of 2026.
New Model Details: The EX2
The vehicle, known as the EX2 in Australia and the Xingyuan (or Star Wish) in China, will compete directly with popular EVs like the MG 4 and BYD Atto 2. The EX2 boasts dimensions of 4135mm in length, 1805mm in width, and 1580mm in height, with a 2650mm wheelbase. For comparison, this makes it slightly smaller than a Volkswagen Golf, yet still designed to maximize interior space.
Market Success and Storage Capacity
Geely reports impressive sales figures for the EX2 in China, where it has become the best-selling vehicle this year with over 400,000 units sold since its launch and 50,000 units in September alone. The company highlights the car’s intelligent interior design, featuring over 30 storage compartments and a front trunk (frunk) for added convenience.
Pricing Expectations
Though official pricing is pending, Geely’s history of competitive pricing suggests the EX2 will be a strong value contender. Estimates place the starting price between $28,000 and $32,000 AUD, undercutting the MG 4 and approaching the lower end of the BYD Atto 2’s range. This aggressive pricing could position Geely as a major player in the affordable EV market.
Platform and Future Updates
The EX2 is built on Geely’s Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA), the same platform used for its EX5 and Starray EM-i SUVs. Geely has not yet released full specifications but promises more details closer to the Australian launch.
The entry of the EX2 marks a significant step for Geely in diversifying its Australian lineup. The vehicle’s success in China and competitive pricing indicate it could become a popular choice for budget-conscious EV buyers, further accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in the region.
