Genesis has unveiled its first high-performance model under the new “Magma” sub-brand: the GV60 Magma. This all-electric crossover accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds – rivaling supercars like the McLaren Artura, while maintaining luxury comfort. Priced around £80,000, the GV60 Magma isn’t just about raw speed; it’s about driver engagement, according to Genesis vehicle development director Tyrone Johnson.
Beyond Speed: The Philosophy of Magma
Johnson, a veteran of performance car development from Ford (ST and RS models), emphasizes that Magma prioritizes the feeling of connection to the car over sheer horsepower. Genesis aims to deliver an experience that approaches the visceral feedback of a single-seater race car. This explains why, despite the impressive specs, the focus is on driver immersion rather than simply breaking records.
Performance Upgrades and Power
The GV60 Magma significantly increases performance over the standard GV60 Performance model. Power jumps to 601 bhp (with an additional 40 bhp in boost mode), alongside 740 Nm of torque. Thermal management has been optimized for both rapid acceleration and sustained track use, though real-world range is estimated at under 300 miles.
The vehicle also receives active suspension lowered by 18mm, upgraded brakes, revised steering, and bespoke tires. These enhancements aren’t just about numbers; they’re about refining handling and maximizing driver control.
Why the GV60 Magma, Not the Ioniq 5 N?
The GV60 Magma shares key technology with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, including an eight-speed virtual gearshift and a drift mode. However, Genesis defends the £15,000 price difference by positioning the Magma as a grand tourer rather than a dedicated track car. According to Johnson, the GV60 Magma is designed for high-speed driving on roads like the German Autobahn, prioritizing comfort and refinement alongside performance.
Sound and Experience: The Synthetic Edge
Genesis has invested heavily in the GV60 Magma’s synthesized sound experience. The vehicle starts with an artificial whine that evolves into a V6-like roar, complete with paddle-shifted virtual gears. This isn’t just for show; it’s a deliberate effort to create a more immersive driving experience.
Driving Modes and Design
The Magma features bespoke drive modes, including “Sprint” and “GT,” offering varying degrees of aggression. The exterior design has been upgraded with flared wheel arches, larger air intakes, and a functional rear wing for increased downforce. Inside, the cabin receives black suede trim with orange accents, a unique steering wheel, and a 27-inch panoramic display that transforms into a performance-focused layout in Magma mode.
Comfort and Refinement
Despite its aggressive performance, the GV60 Magma maintains a focus on luxury. Active noise-canceling, sound-insulating glass, and reinforced seals contribute to a serene interior. The suspension geometry has been tweaked for improved stability and ride comfort, ensuring the Magma remains a comfortable daily driver.
Future of Magma
Genesis plans to extend the Magma sub-brand across its entire model lineup, establishing “Luxury High Performance” as a core brand pillar. The company is focusing on design cues that suggest “subtle, untapped power,” and three key attributes will define future Magma models: “Unspoken Dominance,” “Captivating Control,” and “Sharpened Immersion.”
The GV60 Magma is scheduled for UK deliveries in late 2026. With a price range of £75,000 to £80,000, it positions itself as a unique alternative to competitors like the Porsche Macan Electric and Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.
This launch marks a significant step for Genesis, signaling its commitment to high-performance vehicles without sacrificing luxury or refinement.
