Infiniti Aims to Revive Sporty Edge with New QX65 SUV

Infiniti is poised to unveil the 2027 QX65 crossover coupe at the New York Auto Show in April, signaling a return to the bolder styling that once defined the brand. The new model is designed to recapture the spirit of the iconic FX series, a vehicle remembered for its aggressive design and sporty handling.

The FX Legacy and Modern Design

The QX65 has been teased with a darkened image, but closer inspection reveals design cues reminiscent of the QX60 while introducing distinct elements like split lighting, a unique front bumper, and a sharply sloped roofline. This approach is deliberate: Infiniti previewed the QX65 with a concept at Monterey Car Week in 2025, clearly signaling its intent to deliver a production model that honors the FX’s legacy.

Why this matters: The FX was a standout in a crowded segment, known for its distinctive look and engaging driving experience. Infiniti’s current lineup has become more conservative; the QX65 is a clear attempt to inject excitement back into the brand.

Interior and Tech Features

Inside, the QX65 will largely mirror the QX60, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment system powered by Google. Higher trims will offer premium touches such as quilted seats, wood trim, and a Klipsch sound system. The interior is not a radical departure, but serves as a comfortable and tech-forward space for drivers and passengers.

Powertrain Options

At launch, the QX65 will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 268 hp and 286 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and optional all-wheel drive. However, Infiniti is also hinting at a more powerful 3.5-liter V6 option, potentially with around 300 hp, and even a Red Sport variant for enthusiasts.

The potential for a V6 is key: While the base engine provides adequate performance, the higher-output options will be crucial to delivering the sporty driving experience that made the FX so memorable.

Market Timing

Infiniti has confirmed that the QX65 will arrive in dealerships early this summer. The timing is strategic, as the crossover coupe segment remains highly competitive, with brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi offering similar vehicles.

The QX65 represents Infiniti’s effort to reclaim its identity as a premium performance brand. By leveraging the nostalgia for the FX and blending it with modern technology, Infiniti hopes to attract buyers who value both style and driving dynamics.
