Jeep Renegade: Aiming for Dacia Duster Territory with New Model

24

Jeep is preparing to launch a next-generation Renegade within the next two years, directly challenging the popular Dacia Duster in the affordable family SUV segment. The current Renegade, launched in 2014, feels dated, and its role as the entry point to the Jeep lineup was overshadowed by the smaller, more successful Avenger, which tripled the brand’s UK sales.

The new Renegade, confirmed by former Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa, will arrive by 2027, including an electric version priced around $25,000 (roughly £19,000) in the US. Jeep’s head of product planning in Europe, Marco Montepeloso, has hinted that the new model will be similar in size to the current one, bridging the gap between the 4.08-meter Avenger and the 4.55-meter Compass. This places it roughly at 4.3 meters, comparable to the Dacia Duster.

Bridging the Gap: Size and Customer Base

Montepeloso emphasizes that the new Renegade will target a different customer than the Avenger. The Avenger suits compact urban needs, while the Renegade will cater to young families or those with active lifestyles who require more space. Jeep believes there’s a clear distinction in customer needs: those prioritizing compactness versus those needing more cargo and passenger room. The goal is to avoid cannibalizing sales between the two models.

Powertrain Flexibility: Freedom of Choice

Jeep is committed to offering a wide range of powertrains, including electric and hybrid options, to adapt to different market demands. Montepeloso stresses the importance of “Freedom of Choice,” allowing customers to select the powertrain that best suits their needs. While a pure-electric version is confirmed, Jeep will likely retain hybrid options, with at least one four-wheel-drive version available.

Under the Hood: New Platform and Range

The next Renegade will utilize the STLA Small platform, replacing the current CMP/e-CMP architecture. This platform, debuting in 2026 with the next Vauxhall Corsa and Peugeot 208, will accommodate both hybrid and electric powertrains, with electric versions potentially offering over 300 miles of range.

Design and Interior: Rugged and Practical

The new Renegade is expected to maintain Jeep’s rugged aesthetic, featuring a boxy design, seven-slot grille, squared-off wheel arches, and chunky cladding. While not designed for extreme off-roading, Jeep will prioritize short overhangs for better approach and departure angles. The interior is expected to follow the trend set by the latest Compass, with dual displays, durable materials, and practical design.

Pricing and Availability

The new Jeep Renegade is expected to be priced between the Avenger and Compass, starting around £30,000. The current Renegade is available through the Buy a Car service for just over £27,000.

The new Renegade aims to offer a compelling alternative in the affordable SUV segment, combining Jeep’s off-road heritage with practicality and modern technology
