Kia has unveiled the EV5 GT, a new all-wheel-drive performance variant of its mid-size electric SUV, at the 2026 Brussels Motor Show. While not a radical overhaul, the GT model introduces a significant power boost, positioning it as a direct competitor to vehicles like the Skoda Enyaq vRS and Volkswagen ID.4 GTX.
Performance and Power Output
The EV5 GT combines two motors to produce approximately 300bhp – an increase of 85bhp over the standard model. This output aligns with other dual-motor EVs in its class, though it lags behind more aggressive performance options such as the Tesla Model Y Performance. Acceleration from 0 to 62mph takes 6.2 seconds.
Key Features and Enhancements
Beyond the increased power, the EV5 GT includes several upgrades:
- Adaptive Suspension: For improved handling and ride comfort.
- 20-Inch Wheels: With performance-oriented tires for better grip.
- Virtual Gear Shift (VGS): A unique feature allowing drivers to select simulated gears with corresponding throttle response and engine sounds, enhancing the driving experience.
- GT Driver Mode: A dedicated driving profile optimized for performance.
- Subtle Styling Changes: Including GT badging, but maintaining a relatively understated aesthetic.
Battery and Range
The EV5 GT uses the same 81.4kWh battery pack as other EV5 models. While an official range estimate is pending, Kia expects it to be around 300 miles on a combined cycle—roughly 10% less than the single-motor version. This trade-off is typical for performance-focused EVs, where power gains often come at the expense of some range.
Market Positioning and Pricing
Kia has not yet announced pricing, but it’s expected to be only slightly higher than the GT-Line S trim, around £52,000. The EV5 GT is one of three new GT models Kia is launching, signaling a broader push into performance-oriented EVs.
The EV5 GT’s appeal lies in its balanced approach: it offers a noticeable performance upgrade without sacrificing practicality or straying too far from the core EV5 experience. The addition of AWD and the unique VGS system add distinctive features that set it apart from competitors.
