Mercedes-AMG CLE Mythos: Return of the V8 Powerhouse

17

Mercedes-AMG is bringing back extreme performance to its mid-size coupé with the upcoming CLE Mythos. This new model, the second in AMG’s exclusive “Mythos” series, promises over 600 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine – a decisive shift away from the controversial four-cylinder hybrid setup found in the latest C63.

The Engine: Motorsport Heritage in a Coupé

The CLE Mythos will feature a new V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, technology previously seen in the high-performance AMG GT Black Series. This design reduces engine weight, boosts revs, and sharpens throttle response for a more visceral driving experience. While the S-Class variant of this engine delivers over 530 horsepower, the lighter CLE Mythos is expected to exceed 650 horsepower with torque surpassing 590 lb-ft.

Why this matters: AMG’s move back to V8 power addresses criticism of the C63’s four-cylinder engine, catering to enthusiasts who prefer the traditional AMG formula. The flat-plane crank also improves engine packaging, simplifying integration into the CLE’s chassis.

Performance and Handling: Track-Focused Engineering

The increased power will translate into a 0-62 mph time under 4.0 seconds and a potential top speed near 186 mph. To handle the extra output, the CLE’s chassis will undergo substantial modifications, including a wider front track, increased wheel offset, and a lower ride height – engineering levels previously reserved for AMG’s Black Series models.

Aerodynamic Enhancements

The exterior design will match the performance upgrades. Expect a reworked front end with aggressive cooling ducts, wider wheel arches, a carbon fiber roof, and a prominent rear wing for increased downforce. The exhaust system will also be upgraded to trapezoidal tailpipe tips, further differentiating the Mythos from standard CLE models.

Exclusivity and Pricing: A Rare Breed

Like the SL PureSpeed – the first Mythos model – the CLE Mythos will be produced in limited numbers, likely with a high price tag. The SL PureSpeed started at £664,000 with only 250 units available, signaling that the CLE Mythos will be an exclusive and expensive offering.

The bigger picture: AMG is positioning the Mythos series as its ultimate performance line, blending motorsport technology with extreme exclusivity. The CLE Mythos is not just a faster coupé; it’s a statement about AMG’s dedication to high-performance engineering.

Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027 after a limited production run later this year.
