Mercedes-Benz to Launch Electric ‘Baby G-Class’ in 2027

13

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its iconic G-Class lineup with a smaller, all-electric model slated for release around 2027. This move positions the brand to compete directly with electric off-road rivals like the Land Rover Defender Sport and Jeep Recon, offering a more accessible entry point into the G-Class world without compromising capability.

Expanding the G-Class Legacy

For decades, the G-Class has represented a singular blend of luxury and ruggedness. Now, Mercedes is scaling this formula down, creating a ‘baby G’ that retains the signature boxy design and off-road prowess while embracing an electric powertrain. The decision to electrify this smaller variant is driven by market demand and the need to offer a competitive alternative in the growing electric SUV segment.

Unlike many road-focused electric SUVs, the baby G-Class is being engineered for serious off-road performance. Mercedes executives have emphasized the importance of maintaining the G-Class’s authenticity, even in a smaller package. This commitment means investing in a unique chassis design rather than adapting existing platforms.

Pricing and Positioning

The expected price point of around £70,000 places the baby G-Class above the Defender Sport and Recon but significantly below the current full-size electric G-Class, which starts at £154,870. This pricing reflects the G-Class name’s premium cachet while still making it a more attainable option for a wider audience.

Mercedes is also considering model designations like ‘G 250’ or ‘G 300 with EQ Technology’ to align with its existing EV branding.

Design and Features

Spy shots confirm the baby G-Class will closely mirror the design of its larger sibling. Expect the same squared-off headlights, upright windscreen, flat bonnet, and side-hinged rear door with an optional spare wheel cover (which may house charging cables).

Inside, the baby G-Class will feature a modern cabin with Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment system, but retain iconic G-Class elements like turbine air vents and an upright driving position. The interior will be both luxurious and functional, maintaining the brand’s signature aesthetic.

Under the Hood

The baby G-Class will utilize a modified version of Mercedes’ MB.EA platform, potentially with a dual-motor setup offering up to 349bhp and four-wheel drive. Unlike some automakers, Mercedes has ruled out range-extender powertrains for this model, focusing solely on pure electric operation.

The battery capacity will be smaller than the G 580’s 116kWh pack, but details remain unconfirmed.

Engineering Authenticity

Mercedes has invested heavily in developing a unique chassis for the baby G-Class to ensure it lives up to the G-Class reputation. Former CTO Markus Schäfer noted that the vehicle won’t feature a traditional ladder frame but will prioritize wheel articulation and off-road capability.

“We spent a lot of time tuning this car, and over time started to develop so many unique components to make it a very good-looking car and very very capable.”

The development process emphasizes authenticity, ensuring the baby G-Class delivers a driving experience consistent with the brand’s legacy.

The Mercedes-Benz baby G-Class will enter a competitive market with a distinct advantage: the enduring appeal of the G-Class nameplate combined with the benefits of electric propulsion. This new model will bridge the gap between aspirational luxury and practical off-road capability, setting a new standard in the electric SUV segment.
