Mercedes-Benz VLE-Class EV: A New Era for Luxury Minivans

21

Mercedes-Benz is entering the electric minivan segment with the VLE-class, a groundbreaking vehicle designed for passenger comfort and utility. Unlike the brand’s commercial Sprinter van, the VLE prioritizes luxury, seating up to eight passengers in a spacious, tech-forward cabin. This move marks a significant shift for Mercedes, traditionally not associated with minivans in the U.S. market, and signals a growing demand for premium family transport.

Powertrain and Performance

The VLE will launch with two electric powertrain options: a single-motor (268 hp) front-wheel drive setup and a dual-motor (409 hp) all-wheel drive configuration. Both versions utilize an 115-kWh battery pack, promising up to 370 miles of range on a full charge. The vehicle supports ultra-fast 800-volt charging, allowing up to 300kW DC charging speeds, alongside standard 11kW AC charging. Bi-directional charging capabilities add further flexibility.

Interior Luxury and Versatility

The VLE’s interior is designed for high-end travel. Multiple seating arrangements (six, seven, or eight seats) are available, with options ranging from a standard bench to fully adjustable, massage-equipped “Grand Comfort” chairs in the second row. These chairs include deployable tray tables, wireless charging, and powered leg rests.

The third row can be configured with a bench or individual seats, some of which can be removed entirely for increased cargo space. The cabin features premium materials, illuminated air vents, and an optional dash-spanning “Superscreen” combining multiple high-resolution displays. A massive 31.3-inch 8K rear entertainment screen folds down from the ceiling, complete with video conferencing capabilities.

Charging and Future Plans

Mercedes-Benz has equipped the VLE with an 800-volt architecture for fast DC charging at up to 300kW. The 115-kWh battery supports fast charging, and the vehicle supports bi-directional charging. While the initial launch will focus on electric models, Mercedes intends to introduce a hybrid version in the future.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing details for the VLE-class have not been released, but it is expected to be positioned above existing minivans in terms of cost.

The Mercedes-Benz VLE-class represents a bold step into a previously untapped market segment for the brand. It combines electric propulsion, luxury appointments, and unparalleled versatility, setting a new standard for premium minivans.
