MG, the rapidly expanding Chinese-owned automaker, is set to introduce significant advancements in hybrid and electric vehicle technology. The company’s new Hybrid+ system will feature electric turbochargers designed for instant responsiveness, and a unique vibration-cancelling motor to drastically reduce engine noise and energy loss. These innovations are slated for initial deployment in the upcoming MG S9 plug-in hybrid.
Electric Turbocharging: F1 Tech for the Road
MG’s new electric turbocharger, developed at their Frankfurt engineering center, can spin up to 70,000 rpm. This high-speed operation effectively eliminates turbo lag – a common issue in conventional turbocharged engines. According to Qiu Jie, MG’s vice-president of global R&D, this technology was specifically tuned for European drivers who prioritize responsive performance.
The electric turbocharger boosts efficiency and power delivery, smoothing the transition between electric and gasoline operation. Combined with improved digital damping, these systems are designed to enhance refinement and reduce mechanical vibrations.
Noise-Cancelling Motors: A Silent Revolution
A key element of Hybrid+ is its ability to counteract engine vibrations in real-time. By using sensors to calculate the precise torque needed, the electric motor effectively cancels out unwanted oscillations. MG describes this process as similar to noise-cancelling headphones, reducing energy waste from mechanical friction and heat.
This technology enhances not only comfort but also overall efficiency. The vibration reduction minimizes energy loss, resulting in smoother and quieter operation.
Semi-Solid-State Battery: A Step Towards Longer Range
Beyond hybrids, MG is preparing to launch a higher-specification version of the MG 4 EV Urban hatchback with a semi-solid-state battery. This battery is among the first mass-produced units of its kind and will arrive in Europe later this year.
The SolidCore battery uses a 95% solid electrolyte (compared to traditional batteries with lower solid content), promising improved energy density, faster charging, and more consistent performance across varying temperatures. This represents a significant step towards longer-range electric vehicles.
MG’s commitment to rapid innovation in both hybrid and electric technologies signals a growing shift in the automotive industry. By leveraging advanced engineering, the company is poised to deliver vehicles that offer superior performance, efficiency, and comfort.
