SAIC’s MG brand is launching the MG4 Anxin Edition, a significant step forward in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology. The model will debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show on November 21, marking it as one of the first passenger cars to reach mass production with a semi-solid-state battery. This new variant offers a range of 530 kilometers (CLTC cycle) and slots into the existing MG4 lineup, which is currently priced between 68,800 to 102,800 yuan ($9,690 to $14,490 USD).
Battery Technology and Performance
The Anxin Edition utilizes a manganese-based lithium-ion battery pack developed in partnership between SAIC and QingTao Energy. Semi-solid-state batteries represent a critical advancement over traditional liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion cells. By combining solid and liquid electrolyte components—with solid materials comprising over 90% of the structure—these batteries achieve higher energy density and improved thermal stability while maintaining compatibility with existing production lines.
The battery capacity remains at 53.95 kWh, mirroring the long-range LFP variant. However, the semi-solid-state pack adds approximately 15 kilograms to the curb weight, bringing it to 1,500 kg. The car is powered by a single front motor producing 120 kW and 250 Nm of torque, enabling a claimed 0–50 km/h acceleration time of 3 seconds.
Design and Interior Updates
While the exterior design remains largely unchanged, aligning with the existing MG4 lineup, several interior upgrades distinguish the Anxin Edition. The central touchscreen has been enlarged from 12.3 inches to 15.6 inches, and mechanical buttons beneath the display have been removed for a cleaner aesthetic. The rotary shift controller has been replaced with a column-mounted selector. A 50-watt wireless charging pad has been added to the lower console for convenience.
The car also features the MG–Oppo intelligent cockpit system, powered by a Snapdragon 8155 chip, enhancing the user experience. The dimensions remain consistent at 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm. The rear retains the full-width light bar with distinctive arrow-style position lights.
Market Impact and Sales
MG reports October sales of 11,480 units for the MG4, demonstrating strong consumer demand. The Anxin Edition will be added to the lineup as an additional option once production commences, offering buyers a choice between different battery technologies. The move to semi-solid-state batteries represents a strategic step for MG, positioning the brand at the forefront of EV innovation.
The adoption of semi-solid-state technology is significant because it addresses key limitations of traditional batteries, such as energy density and thermal stability. This advancement could accelerate the transition to EVs by improving performance and safety. The MG4 Anxin Edition is a concrete example of how battery innovation is driving the future of electric mobility
