Montgomery County has begun rolling out a new fleet of mobile speed enforcement units that are already turning heads—not just for their high-tech capabilities, but for their striking, futuristic design.
Locals have quickly dubbed the devices “Cybertruck cameras” due to their sharp angles and silver, armored appearance. However, the aesthetic is more than just a stylistic choice; it is a direct response to a growing problem of equipment tampering.
Built to Withstand Vandalism
The new units, officially known as Poliscan Enforcement Trailers and manufactured by the German company Vitronic, feature a heavy-duty design intended to protect them from physical damage.
According to Montgomery County Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Earl Stoddard, the front glass is constructed from ballistic-grade material. This upgrade follows a history of vandalism targeting previous camera models. By utilizing armored components, the county aims to ensure that these high-cost enforcement tools remain operational and protected from those attempting to disable them.
A Massive Expansion of Automated Enforcement
The deployment of these six large trailers is part of a much broader initiative to automate traffic safety across the county. This expansion, which was announced last fall, includes:
- 140 new speed cameras: Comprising 96 smaller portable units and 38 fixed cameras specifically for school zones.
- 76 additional red-light cameras: Aimed at reducing intersection accidents.
Unlike older mobile setups that required a police van and an officer on-site, these new trailers are fully autonomous. They can be deployed to “high-injury networks”—areas identified by officials as having high rates of traffic-related accidents—and monitored remotely by law enforcement. This allows the police department to be more mobile and reactive to specific traffic trends without constant manual supervision.
The Cost of Speeding
While the technology used to catch speeders has become more advanced, the financial consequences for drivers remain steep. The fine structure is designed to escalate significantly based on the severity of the violation:
