Nissan is bringing back the Xterra, a nameplate beloved by off-road enthusiasts, with plans for both traditional gasoline and hybrid powertrains. The news comes from Ponz Pandikuthira, Nissan’s chief product and planning officer for the U.S., who spoke at the New York auto show.
Powertrain Details: ICE and Hybrid Choices
Early speculation suggested an all-electric Xterra, but Nissan has since revised those plans. Instead, the SUV will launch with a V-6 internal combustion engine (ICE) option. Pandikuthira clarified that if a gasoline-only version is produced, it will use a V-6, not a turbocharged four-cylinder. Given Nissan’s current lineup, the Xterra is likely to feature an evolved version of the 3.8-liter V-6 found in the Frontier pickup.
A hybrid powertrain will also be available, though Nissan has not yet revealed the exact configuration or timing of its release. The company is actively working on integrating hybrid technology without compromising performance or capability.
Design: Bold and Imposing
Nissan is emphasizing a rugged, aggressive design for the new Xterra. Pandikuthira described the initial full-size mock-up as “super imposing,” indicating a return to the tough, in-your-face aesthetic that defined the original Xterra. The design will prioritize visual presence over aerodynamic efficiency, a deliberate choice to maintain the vehicle’s off-road character.
No Manual Transmission
Despite demand from some enthusiasts, Nissan has ruled out a manual transmission option for the Xterra or other large Nissan SUVs and trucks. Pandikuthira explained that the focus for these vehicles is on dynamic performance, suspension tuning, and powertrain calibration, rather than a manual gearbox. The space typically occupied by a manual shifter is also considered valuable for storage. Nissan will continue to offer manual transmissions in sportier models, such as the Z Nismo.
