Nissan Discontinues Versa: No Sub-$19K Option Remains

3

Nissan has confirmed that the Versa, previously its most affordable new car, will not be available for the 2026 model year. Production of the Versa ended in December 2025, marking the end of a sub-$19,000 entry point for Nissan buyers in the U.S. market.

The End of an Era for Budget Car Buyers

For the 2025 model year, the Versa started at just $18,585, making it the cheapest new vehicle Nissan sold. This discontinuation leaves consumers with fewer options if affordability is their primary concern. The next least expensive Nissan models – the Kicks Play, Kicks, and Sentra – all begin above $22,000.

Production Cutbacks and Market Forces

The Versa’s demise was foreshadowed earlier in 2025 when Nissan halted production of the manual transmission version, citing low sales volume and the impact of Trump-era tariffs. While the automatic Versa continued production in Mexico, overall demand did not justify continued manufacturing.

What Buyers Face Now

Nissan’s official statement indicates a shift in strategy toward models like the Sentra and Altima sedans, as well as the Kicks SUV. However, these alternatives are notably more expensive. The Kicks Play, priced at $23,000, is likely to become Nissan’s new base model, though its future beyond 2026 is uncertain.

Implications for the Auto Market

The Versa’s disappearance highlights a broader trend: the increasing cost of new vehicles. The lack of a sub-$19,000 option from Nissan forces budget-conscious buyers to consider alternatives from other brands or explore the used car market. This move may also push more consumers toward the growing segment of compact SUVs, despite their higher price tags.

“Nissan remains committed to offering affordable and stylish vehicles in the sedan segment… while also offering strong value in the compact SUV segment,” according to a company spokesperson.

The discontinuation of the Versa is a clear signal that automakers are prioritizing higher-margin vehicles over ultra-budget options. This shift could reshape the entry-level car market, leaving fewer choices for consumers seeking the absolute lowest purchase price.
