Geely’s New SUV: A Strikingly Familiar Design

12

Geely is launching the Zhanjian 700, an SUV that closely resembles the Land Rover Defender. The vehicle, marketed as an “AI all-terrain hardcore SUV,” has drawn attention for its near-identical exterior styling, raising questions about design inspiration and market strategy.

Design Echoes the Defender

The Zhanjian 700’s design is remarkably similar to the Defender. Key elements such as rectangular headlights with circular daytime running lights, a single-bar illuminated grille with a central logo, and body-work mirroring the Defender are all present. The SUV also features familiar front fender vents, plastic body cladding, and a greenhouse reminiscent of Land Rover’s iconic vehicle.

However, Geely has made some subtle distinctions. The 700’s beltline rises at the rear doors, unlike Land Rover’s side-mounted panel design. Additional touches include a contrasting white roof, two-tone wheels, and a rear-mounted spare tire carrier, all contributing to a rugged aesthetic.

Interior Features

While interior images are limited, the Zhanjian 700 appears to prioritize functionality. It includes a lever-style shifter with a leather grab handle, flanked by metallic controls, including a potential drive mode selector. High-quality switchgear and dedicated off-road buttons—such as a ride height selector, 4L button, and locking rear differential—suggest a focus on all-terrain capabilities.

Powertrain Options

Geely has remained ambiguous about the 700’s powertrain, but indications suggest it may offer both electric and combustion options. The vehicle has integrated frame construction and a tri-motor four-wheel drive system for “intelligent electric performance”. Ports on both sides of the rear fenders suggest the possibility of a hybrid setup, with one port potentially for charging and the other for a fuel tank.

Previous reports indicate the SUV may come with a 1.5- or 2.0-liter engine alongside a 70 kWh battery pack. This dual-powertrain approach could appeal to a broader range of consumers, especially in markets where EV infrastructure is still developing.

The Geely Zhanjian 700’s design signals a clear attempt to capitalize on the Defender’s established brand recognition. Whether this strategy will succeed remains to be seen, but it highlights the growing trend of automotive imitation in a competitive global market.
