Smart is actively developing the successor to its iconic Fortwo, internally known as the #2, with testing underway ahead of its planned release in late 2026. The new model will be the smallest in Smart’s expanding lineup, positioned below its existing #1, #3, #5, and #6 vehicles.
New Platform, Shared Engineering
This marks a shift in Smart’s development process. Unlike previous models engineered primarily by Geely (China), the #2 is built on the new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), a joint project between Geely and Mercedes-Benz. This collaboration reflects a strategic focus on the European market, where the two-seater is expected to be most popular.
The ECA platform is currently being tested using a modified Fortwo body. Smart confirms this ensures the #2 will maintain similar proportions to the car it replaces, which has been a popular choice for urban driving since its launch in 1998.
A Reinvented Fortwo Design
While Smart hasn’t revealed final designs, the company promises a “reinvention” of the Fortwo with a fresh identity styled by Mercedes-Benz. The vehicle will retain the classic “wheels-at-the-corners” stance that has defined the model for decades.
The #2 will also maintain the Fortwo’s two-door, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive configuration, preserving its signature driving dynamics. This suggests Smart is doubling down on the core attributes that made the Fortwo a unique offering.
Platform Costs and Future Models
The development of the ECA platform represents a significant investment. Smart CEO Dirk Adelmann has stated that the cost of the new architecture is substantial, implying that additional models will need to utilize it to justify the expense. This suggests Smart may expand its lineup further with other compact electric vehicles in the coming years.
The #2 represents a key step in Smart’s transition to an all-electric future, demonstrating a renewed commitment to urban mobility while leveraging both European and Chinese engineering expertise. The decision to share the platform across multiple models is a pragmatic one, ensuring a return on investment and long-term viability for the brand.
