Skoda Superb PHEV: Australia’s New Cheapest Plug-In Hybrid Wagon

21

Skoda has launched a new, entry-level plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its Superb wagon in Australia, priced from $66,990 drive-away. This makes it the most affordable PHEV wagon currently available in the country, undercutting rivals like the Cupra Leon Sportstourer VZe.

Competitive Pricing and Market Focus

The Superb PHEV Select is positioned primarily for fleet buyers seeking an eco-friendly executive vehicle. The price reduction of $8,000 compared to the higher-spec Sportline trim makes it an attractive option for companies with sustainability goals. However, this price leadership may be short-lived, as BYD prepares to release its Seal 6 wagon, which could challenge Skoda’s position.

Powertrain and Range

The Superb PHEV Select utilizes the Volkswagen Group’s second-generation PHEV system. It combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (110kW) with an electric motor and a 25.7kWh lithium-ion battery, delivering a combined output of 150kW and 350Nm.

Importantly, the car offers 112km of electric-only range (WLTP cycle) and supports fast charging at up to 50kW via DC public chargers. This means drivers can cover significant distances on electric power alone, reducing fuel costs and emissions.

Features and Trim Levels

The Superb PHEV Select comes standard with notable features like a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone mirroring, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, tri-zone climate control, and heated front seats. It also includes a full suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

However, some premium features like a head-up display, upgraded sound system, and ventilated seats are reserved for the higher-spec Sportline model. This tiered approach allows Skoda to cater to different budgets and preferences.

Ride and Handling

Skoda’s Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) adaptive suspension is standard on the PHEV Select, ensuring a comfortable ride. According to Skoda’s local director Lucie Kuhn, the Superb PHEV is ideal for businesses aiming to demonstrate environmental responsibility through their vehicle choices.

“I would say Superb PHEV will be mostly fleet, mainly for companies – it’s a kind of an executive car so we expect to do that direction for the companies that require a certain environmental policy,” said Ms. Kuhn.

The launch of the Superb PHEV Select underscores the growing demand for affordable plug-in hybrid options in Australia. The vehicle’s competitive pricing, combined with its practical range and features, positions it as a strong contender in the fleet market and for eco-conscious buyers.
