Subaru Recalls 70,000 Hybrids Over Fuel Leak Risk

23

Subaru is recalling approximately 69,153 vehicles – specifically the 2025 Forester Hybrid and the 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid – due to a potentially dangerous fuel leak. The issue stems from an inadequate seal on the fuel filler cap, which could allow fuel to escape under certain conditions.

The Problem: Heat, Pressure, and Leaks

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem arises when ambient temperatures rise significantly. This increased heat causes pressure to build up inside the fuel tank. If the tank is nearly full, the pressure can force fuel up through the filler neck and past the cap’s seal, leading to a spill.

The risk is real: spilled fuel near hot engine components or ignition sources could start a fire.

Subaru first identified the issue late last year and confirmed it through internal testing. The automaker found that the existing cap design lacked a proper seal to prevent this type of leakage.

What Subaru Is Doing

The company will replace the faulty fuel filler caps with an updated version that includes an O-ring and an improved gasket. This should resolve the pressure-sealing issue. Subaru has stated that, as of now, no injuries or fires have been reported in connection to this defect.

What Owners Should Do

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified within the next 60 days. Until the repair is made, Subaru advises drivers to keep their fuel tanks less than half-full and park their vehicles outdoors. This reduces the risk of fuel spillage in case the leak occurs.

This recall is the first for Subaru this year. While the fix appears straightforward, it’s a critical safety issue that underscores the importance of vehicle maintenance and timely recall responses.

Addressing this fuel leak problem promptly is essential to prevent potential fire hazards. Keeping the tank at 50% full is a simple yet effective way to mitigate risk while waiting for the cap replacement.
