Volkswagen Australia is partnering with Walkinshaw Automotive once again to deliver a high-performance version of its Amarok ute, dubbed the W600. Scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2026, this model aims to transform the already capable Ford Ranger-based Amarok into a more refined on-road performer.
Core Enhancements: Chassis and Suspension
The W600’s primary focus is improving handling and stability. While the 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel engine retains its 184kW power and 600Nm of torque, significant changes have been made to the chassis. The key upgrade is the implementation of Koni frequency-selective dampers, a technology designed to distinguish between various road inputs for improved ride quality and control.
Walkinshaw engineers have adapted an off-road version of these dampers specifically for dual-cab 4×4 applications. This, combined with a new 22mm rear sway bar (fitted despite the challenges posed by leaf springs), drastically reduces body roll and enhances stability.
Wheels, Tires, and Exterior Styling
The W600 rides on unique 20-inch forged alloy wheels designed in Australia, wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV tires. This is a critical upgrade as the standard Goodyear Wranglers often struggle with wet-weather grip, suggesting a deliberate effort to address this known weakness.
Visually, the ute features an aggressive new front bumper with an integrated LED light bar and a repositioned VW logo, necessitating recalibration of radar and camera systems. Electrically operated side steps and a new side-exit exhaust system with dual outlets further distinguish the W600 from standard Amarok models.
Interior Refinements
Inside, the W600 builds upon the mid-spec Amarok Style trim level. Upgrades include premium leather upholstery with “W” branding, W600-branded floor mats, and stainless steel sports pedals. However, the 10-speed automatic transmission retains its standard logic without a dedicated “Sport” mode or paddle shifters.
Why This Matters: The Rise of Performance Utes
The W600 represents a growing trend in the Australian ute market: manufacturers are increasingly focusing on performance and refinement to cater to buyers who want a vehicle that excels beyond off-road capabilities. Walkinshaw’s tuning expertise has long been sought after in this space, and this collaboration is a natural extension of that demand.
The fact that the W600 is being positioned as a dynamic road vehicle rather than a rock-crawler suggests a clear target audience: drivers who prioritize on-road performance and comfort.
The W600 is a clear attempt to capture buyers who want the rugged looks of a ute but the driving experience of a performance SUV.
Final validation testing is underway at the Lang Lang proving ground, and pricing is expected to reflect the extensive engineering work. The Volkswagen Amarok W600 is poised to be one of the most premium utes on the Australian market when it launches in late 2026.
