Volkswagen has officially unveiled details for its upcoming ID. Cross, an electric crossover positioned as the brand’s most affordable EV yet. The vehicle, slated for a European release this fall, will start at approximately €28,000 (roughly $32,218 USD). This pricing signals Volkswagen’s push to broaden EV accessibility, targeting a wider consumer base.
Powertrain and Performance Options
The ID. Cross will be built on the MEB+ platform – the same architecture underpinning other ID. models – and will offer three front-mounted electric motor options. These include variants producing 114 hp (85 kW), 133 hp (99 kW), and a more powerful 208 hp (155 kW). A high-performance GTI version, delivering 223 hp (166 kW), is planned for a 2027 release, though it remains unclear if this variant will extend to the ID. Cross lineup.
Battery and Range Specifications
Buyers will have the choice of two battery packs: a smaller 37 kWh unit utilizing lithium iron phosphate chemistry and a larger 52 kWh pack with a nickel manganese cobalt composition. The 37 kWh battery supports up to 90 kW DC fast charging, while the 52 kWh version can handle 105 kW. Volkswagen estimates the larger battery will provide a maximum range of up to 280 miles (450 km) under optimal conditions.
Dimensions and Practicality
The ID. Cross measures 163.5 inches in length, 70.6 inches in width, and 62.2 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 102.4 inches. It can tow up to 2,645 lbs (1,200 kg). The interior will feature a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13-inch infotainment display, echoing the ID. Polo’s cabin design. Cargo space is rated at 16.8 cubic feet (475 liters) with the rear seats up, expandable to 47.3 cubic feet (1,340 liters) when folded. An additional 0.7 cubic feet (22 liters) of storage is available in a front trunk (“frunk”).
Why this matters: Volkswagen’s entry into the sub-$35,000 EV crossover segment is significant. The ID. Cross directly challenges rivals like the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Kona Electric, forcing competition on price and features. This move could accelerate EV adoption by making electric vehicles more affordable for mainstream consumers.
The ID. Cross represents a key step in Volkswagen’s broader electrification strategy, aiming for substantial EV market share in the coming years.
