Volkswagen (VW) is now mass-producing a range-extender engine—a technology its own executives once openly ridiculed as “environmentally unfriendly” and “outdated.” This shift comes as the company launches its first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) in China, the ID. Era 9X, which utilizes an updated version of VW’s EA211 engine. The irony has not been lost on competitors, with one executive from Li Auto publicly mocking VW’s about-face.

From Skepticism to Implementation

For years, VW executives in China have been vocal critics of range-extender technology. In 2020, then-CEO Stephan Wöllenstein dismissed gasoline-powered range-extenders as environmentally damaging, while the company’s R&D chief, Wiedmann, claimed they had limited future potential. Now, just six years later, VW is building and selling a vehicle that relies on precisely this technology.

The updated EA211 engine powering the ID. Era 9X features key improvements: a variable-geometry turbocharger for optimized airflow, enhanced thermal efficiency to reduce emissions, and a water-cooled intercooler to maintain cooler intake temperatures. Production takes place in China, signaling VW’s commitment to meeting local market demand.

The Rise of EREVs and VW’s Strategic Shift

Extended-range electric vehicles are gaining traction, particularly in markets like China where consumers desire the flexibility of gasoline backup alongside electric driving. The ID. Era 9X is a sizable SUV, slightly larger than a BMW X7 in length, though narrower with a shorter wheelbase. It offers a rear-mounted electric motor producing up to 295 hp (with higher-performance twin-motor versions available at 510 hp) and two battery options: 51.1 kWh (166 miles of electric range) or 65.2 kWh (up to 211 miles). The range-extender engine provides additional driving distance when needed.

Why This Matters: VW’s reversal demonstrates the speed at which automotive technology evolves, and the necessity for automakers to adapt to changing market realities.
