Zeekr 8X: New Plug-In Hybrid SUV Set for Potential Australian Launch

15

Zeekr has unveiled its latest model, the 8X, a large plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV positioned between the existing 7X and the flagship 9X. This vehicle could expand Zeekr’s lineup in Australia, where the brand has already begun sales with its fully electric models.

Key Specifications and Performance

The Zeekr 8X will be available in both five- and six-seat configurations, launching in China in the first half of 2026. Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 205kW, paired with either a 55.1kWh or 70kWh ternary lithium battery (sourced from CATL-Geely).
These batteries offer WLTC-rated electric ranges of 256km and 328km, respectively.
Charging times, based on the 9X model, are competitive: 20 to 80 percent in around nine minutes using a fast charging system.

The top-spec 8X variant will feature a tri-motor setup producing up to 1030kW of system output, mirroring the performance of the 9X, with 0-100km/h acceleration in just 3.1 seconds. The vehicle rides on Geely’s SEA-S platform, benefiting from a 900V electrical system and the Haohan AI Digital Chassis, which actively adjusts suspension based on road conditions. LiDAR, radar, and cameras will be included as part of an advanced driver-assistance suite.

Design and Dimensions

Stylistically, the 8X adopts a sleeker design than the 9X while still retaining signature Zeekr elements, such as the distinctive chrome grille. At 5100mm long, 1998mm wide, and 1780mm tall with a 3069mm wheelbase, it’s notably larger than the locally available 7X and approaches the size of an Audi Q7. The vehicle will offer wheel options ranging from 20 to 22 inches, with curb weights between 2660kg and 2820kg depending on the configuration.

Australian Market Outlook

Zeekr Australia has indicated it’s considering offering PHEVs locally, making the 8X or 9X potential candidates for future expansion. However, a company spokesperson stated that no firm plans have been confirmed for the Australian market yet.

“We don’t have confirmed plans or timing to share regarding their potential introduction to the Australian market at this stage.”

Context: Zeekr’s Rapid Growth

Established in 2021, Zeekr has quickly become a significant player in the global EV market, backed by Geely (parent company of Volvo and Lotus). While its initial entry into Australia in 2024 was slow, the launch of the 7X mid-size electric SUV provided a needed sales boost. The company is also exploring expansion into the US market, signaling aggressive growth ambitions. The introduction of PHEV options like the 8X could further broaden Zeekr’s appeal and accelerate its market penetration in regions where hybrid technology remains popular.
