Get instant horsepower and torque. 0-60x is standard pricing for activewear. Even the inside dimensions can be measured with a tape measure. But there are some numbers that confuse buyers every time. they ignore. You shouldn’t.
The numbers Gross Combined Weight Rating indicate which can lead to serious errors.
If you plan to tow your car, you need to know what this number means. You need to know why it exists. Before you attach a trailer, you need to know how to find it.
What is the Gross Weight Rating (GCWR)?
Avoid jargon. GCWR is not a measure. This is a limitation.
This is the maximum weight that the manufacturer says is safe for two reasons:
1. Fully loaded trailer.
2. The loaded trailer is attached.
Think of it as a hard ceiling. If the combined weight of both vehicles exceeds this amount, you are in danger.
This is different from gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). GVWR is only for your car. This includes the weight of the vehicle itself, passengers, cargo and trailer. GCWR expands this box to include the trailer’s actual payload.
Ford breaks the math. According to their design, GCWR calculations include:
– The curb weight of the vehicle.
– Permitted payloads.
– Weight of driver and passengers.
– Trailer weight.
This is a helmet. It’s not a suggestion.
Why are there restrictions?
Overloading a truck is dangerous. Overloading the trailer is dangerous. Performing both functions at the same time may cause the machine to malfunction.
Once you exceed the Gross Combined Weight Rating, the physics will no longer work in your favor.
The brakes overheat. It fades. Lose the ability to stop.
The tire cracked under the pressure.
The engine and gearbox seized due to excessive pressure.
Suspension parts are bent or damaged. lose control.
These are not minor inconveniences. They are devastating events. Manufacturers set the GCWR to prevent this. Ignoring it is gambling with your life and the structural integrity of your car.
Where can I find GCWR?
No need to guess. The manufacturer has done a good job with this.
Look at the driver’s side door frame. There is a label. GVWR is listed. Front and rear GAWR (gross axle weights) are usually listed. But is GCWR listed? Not always.
Check your owner’s manual. Check the manufacturer’s website. Search for a specific year and model.
If you can’t find it, be careful. We work without a safety manual.

Your safety depends on finding this number. Do not skip this step. The path does not tolerate ignorance.
BMW weight restrictions by model and year
When towing a trailer with a BMW, the gross vehicle weight rating (GCWR) is a strict upper limit. It’s not just about how far your car can tow. Total weight of vehicle, passengers, fuel, cargo, trailer and payload. If you forget this number, you are ignoring structural integrity.
This information is from the end of the 21st century. You will see the difference. BMW does not publish a GCWR for all sedans of this era. M cars are difficult. The M3, M5, and M6 models generally do not have a clear GCWR listing in the published specifications and are therefore not suitable for heavy towing. SUVs tell a different story.
2006 BMW GCWR Information
The X5 is a flagship product. It weighs 10,802 pounds. For a luxury SUV, this is a serious problem. The X3 follows at £7,673.
car? There is not enough information. 325, 330, 525, 530, 550, 650, 750 and Z4 models do not have GCWR listed. This suggests that either BMW has not rated the vehicle for towing or the information is not included in the standard data sheet. The Alpina B7 is also missing.
2007 BMW GCWR Information
The capacity of the X5 has been increased. Weight increases to 11,132 lbs. The X3’s weight remains stable at 7,662 pounds.
This sedan is again left in the dark with the M5, M6 and Z4M. There are no numbers. If you’re trying to tow a boat with your 2007 530i, it’s guesswork.
2008 BMW GCWR Data
The X6 also joins the group. GCWR is 11,044 lbs. The X5 still weighs 11,132 pounds. The X3 still weighs 7,662 pounds.
128, 135, 328, 335, 528, 535, 550, 650, 750, M3 and Z4 are not classified. The Alpina B7 still doesn’t exist. There is also no information about the M5.
2009 BMW GCWR Information
The X5’s weight drops slightly to 11,066 pounds. The X6 has a weight capacity of 11,044 pounds. The X3’s weight remains the same at 7,662 pounds.
GCWR data is still missing for M5 and M6. The rest of the sedan and coupe lineup also makes no mention of towing capabilities.
Buick towing capacity limitations
Buick keeps it simple. The sedan does not tow heavy objects. In SUVs, numbers matter.
2006 Buick GCWR Information
The weight limits for the La Crosse and Lucerne are 4,645 pounds and 4,914 pounds, respectively. These are very light. It’s not like towing an RV.
The Rainier River is a different kind of river. It weighs 10,500 kilograms. The Terraza weighs 8,500 kilograms. Rendezvous has a nominal weight of 7,746 kilograms.
2007 Buick GCWR Information
Lacrosse and Lucerne are no different. Mr. Rainier and Mr. Rendezvous remained the same.
Terraza has been removed from the list. It disappears.
2008 Buick GCWR Information
Enclave joins the conversation. Rated weight is 9500 lbs. Weight limits for lacrosse and alfalfa are still around 4,600 to 4,900 pounds.
2009 Buick GCWR Information
The Enclave can hold up to £9,500. La Crosse and Lucerne are standing still. Rainier and Rendezvous disappeared. Buicks gather around the enclave and take towing duties.
Cadillac Payload and Towing Ratings
Cadillacs work harder than Buicks. The Escalade is a full-size luxury truck disguised as an SUV. Performance sedans have higher limits than GM sedans.
2006 Cadillac GCWR Information
The CTS weighs 4,659 pounds. The CTS-V takes it up to 5,000 pounds.
The Escalade is big. The standard Escalade weighs 12,902 pounds. The ESV (Extended Wheelbase) weighs 14,000 lbs. The EXT (Pickup Utility) weighs 13,464 lbs.
The SRX weighs 5,314 pounds. The STS weighs 5008 lbs. The STS-V weighs 5,383 lbs.
XLR and XLR-V do not have GCWR listed. These are large touring coupes. It is not made to be portable.
2007 Cadillac GCWR Information
Weight remains unchanged at 4,659 pounds for the CTS and 5,000 pounds for the CTS-V.

Ford Heavy Duty Trucks and the 2009 modification
Ford isn’t messing around with the Super Duty lineup. If you’re looking for a Ford GCWR chart that shows real muscle, the F-250 and F-350 dominated the numbers in the early 2000s. As of 2006, both weighed 15,000 pounds. By 2007, its weight increased to 17,000 pounds and remained at that weight until 2009. That’s a lot of towing capacity for a 2 ton truck.
The E-series van tells a different story. The E-150 started at £11,318 in 2006, rose slightly to £11,500 in 2007 and has stayed there ever since. The E-350 Super Duty can carry heavier loads, with a payload limit of 13,000 pounds for all four years.
Small cars were given short shrift. concentration? In 2006 and 2007 it was £3,771. By 2008, Ford had completely reduced the Focus’s GCWR numbers. The Mustang weighs about 4,600 kilograms. Fusion and F-150 have had dashes next to their names for years. This means that standard GCWR data is not available or the gross weight has not been estimated in a way that produces a single number.
In 2009, Ford took a significant leap forward by introducing the F-150. This rose from a stable £11,765 in 2008 to £14,950 in 2009. Has the figure been confirmed or is it just a different calculation? The Explorer’s weight has also dropped from 8,500 kg to 8,110 kg.
GMC Consistency and Sierra 3500 Drop
GMC plays a safer game. The Sierra 2500 and 3500 are flagship products. The Sierra 3500 reached 16,000 pounds in 2008 and stayed there in 2009. Interestingly, the 2007 Sierra 3500 had a lower GCWR of 15,342 pounds. The number later increased to 16,000 in 2008.
The canyon remains flat. 2006 £5,179 2007 £5,679 2008 and 2009 £5,882. The additions are small. The Yukon Hybrid is an interesting outlier. In 2008 and 2009 it was worth £12,000. But the price of the petrol-only Yukon XL has dropped from £13,000 in 2006-08 to £11,000 in 2009. Why did it drop? Aerodynamics? Payload redistribution? Data just says “down”.
Honda’s compact efficiency
Honda makes it easy. The Civic GCWR jumped from 4,968 pounds in 2006 to 6,060 pounds in 2007. Then in 2009 it returned to 3,738 pounds. Is this a typo in the source data or has the traction decreased significantly? Compared to the 2007 model, the 2009 Civic looks surprisingly weak.
From 2006 to 2009, the Odyssey’s weight remained stable at 8,210 kilograms. Reliable. boring. The weight of the pilot dropped from 9,700 pounds in 2008 to 8,466 pounds in 2009. It has also dropped significantly. The Ridgeline weighs about 10,000 pounds, but it’s comfortable to sit in.
Lexus and modern compact
Hummer hasn’t changed much. The H2 weight started at 13,050kg in 2006, went up to 13,150kg in 2007, jumped to 14,000kg in 2008 and stayed there. The total weight of the H3 is still 8,000 kilograms. The 2009 H3T weighed 9,461 lbs.
Modernity is everywhere. The Accent didn’t have a GCWR in 2006 and 2009, but it showed 4,779 pounds in 2008. The Elantra went from 4,434 pounds in 2006 to 3,623 pounds in 2007 and 2008. The Santa Fe ranges from 39,565 pounds to 52,000 pounds. Models are hard to find. Maybe different trim levels have different ratings?
The gap between Infiniti, Isuzu and luxury cars
Infiniti has very little. The QX56 is a tank that weighs around 14,500 to 15,500 pounds. In 2008 and 2009, the FX45’s weight remained stable at 14,520 lbs. What about the G35 or the M series? Most of the time, the numbers are smaller. The G35 jumped from £4,655 in 2006 to £9,155 in 2007 and then £9,647 in 2008. The M35 reached £12,982 in 2007 but disappeared in 2008 and 2009.
Isuzu is small. As of 2008, the i-370 has a maximum weight of 9,500 pounds. Ascender holds up to 10,000 pounds like glue.
Jaguar is just a wall. GCWR data is not available for 2006-2009 models. They probably didn’t expect the XK to tow the XK. Intelligent.
Jeep’s Wrangler Unlimited received significant improvements for 2009, with curb weight increasing from 5,014 pounds to 7,539 pounds. The Liberty’s weight dropped from 8,500 pounds in 2007 to 6,135 pounds in 2009. The Commander’s weight remained stable at 8,670 pounds.
The brand is gone. And there is less and less data. Where is the next car going?
Kia GCWR
The old Kia didn’t hide its weight very well. or traction capacity.
The 2006 Optima weighs 5,292 lbs. It’s not a boat. It was a small trailer with a lawn mower. Sportage? 4880. Amanti, Rio, Spectrum? Data gaps. Don’t guess.
By 2007, Sedona’s population had risen to 8,015. minivan. You can tow a small Motorhome inside the vehicle. Sorento reached 9299. Sportage is stuck at 4880. Why?
In 2008 and 2009, the Sorento sold for $9,299. In 2009, Borrego’s sales were $9,398. Mid-size SUV. heavy. Valid.

2009 LR2 is listed as 7905. Baby Land Rover. LR3 reached 13662. This is a heavy bet. Range Rover 13564. 13334 for the sports version.
You don’t buy a Land Rover to save fuel. You buy it because you need to move £13,000 and it looks good.

In 2007, the LX 470’s score was 12,240. The GX 470 remains at 11,521. RX 350 is slightly smaller, 7520. RX 400h stays at 8015.

The 2008 MKX went up to 7350. Navigator stays at 15000. The Town Car adds £42 to the 6502.
2009 MKS is listed as 5277. It is a car. Traction is low. MKX is still at 7350 points. The navigator stays at 15,000 points.
The Navigator’s £15,000 mark is impressive for a full-size luxury SUV. If you are towing a large travel trailer, check the hitch. A truck could handle it somehow. Your disorder may not be like that.

Nissan GCWR
Nissan’s 2006-2009 lineup had varying towing capacities. 2006 Nissan Armada weighs 11,818 lbs, Nissan Titan truck weighs 11,465 lbs. The midsize Frontier weighs 10,676 pounds. If you look at the 2007 Nissan Armada, the capacity jumps to 12,800 lbs. That year, the Titan weighed 11,600 lbs. The Frontier peaked at 11,133 lbs.
In sedans, this number drops dramatically. The 2006 Altima weighs 4,151 lbs. The Maxima is slightly heavier at 4,623 pounds. By 2007, the Altima weighed in at 4,205 pounds, rising slightly to 4,632 pounds for the hybrid version. The Maxima’s weight rises to 4,741 lbs. The Sentra’s weight went from 3,663 pounds in 2006 to 4,003 pounds in 2007.
The crossover segment has some interesting features. 2008 Nissan Armada Weight has increased significantly to 15,100 lbs. The Frontier is down slightly to 10,676 lbs. The Titan rises to 11,688 lbs. Pontiac shrank before it disappeared, and the 2009 Pontiac GCWR numbers reflect that shrinking. The G5 sedan started at 4,141 pounds in 2007 and 2008 and dropped to 3,902 pounds in 2009. The G6 Coupe/Sedan weighs between 4,455 pounds. and 4530 lbs.
Grand Prix weight remains constant at around 4,627 lbs. The 2008 Pontiac G8 is the heaviest model at 6,035 pounds, and this limit is the same as the 2009 Pontiac G8. The Vibe van weighed around 4,350 pounds until 2009, when it was increased to 4,506 pounds.
The 2006 Montana SV6 costs $8,500, an impressive figure for a small station wagon. Torrent SUVs weigh between 7,310 and 7,407 pounds. The Solstice and GTO do not have GCWR values listed, presumably due to their sporty, low-strain characteristics.
Porsche GCWR
Porsche keeps it simple. The 2006 Porsche Cayenne and 2008 Cayenne both weigh 12,628 lbs. Weight increases slightly in 2009 to 12,650 lbs.
Sports cars like 911, Boxster, Cayman do not have GCWR information. This makes sense. You can’t tow a car with a 911. The Cayenne is a workhorse here, but its capacity is still not as big as that of American SUVs.
Saab GCWR
The Saab composition is sparse, but stable. The 2006 Saab 9-5 has a GCWR of 7,120 lbs. 9-7X $10,500 SUV developed with GMC from 2006-2009.
Saab 9-3 Shows improvement. In 2006 it weighed 5,430 pounds, dropped slightly to 5,380 pounds in 2007 and 2008, and jumped to 5,680 pounds in 2009. 2006 Saab 9-2X weighs 5,220 pounds.
Saturn GCWR
Saturn’s later years are chaotic. 2006 Saturn Outlook weighs 9500 lbs. By 2008, that number had dropped significantly to 6,872 pounds. The 2009 model weighs 6,852 lbs.
Saturn Relay Minivan prices start at $8,500 in 2006 and drop to $7,918 in 2007. VUE Crossover weights range from 4,857.5 lbs to 475 lbs. Hybrid VUE versions weigh between 4,857 and 5,439 pounds.
The Ion sedan weighs about 3,900 lbs. The plow was steady at $4,678. Sky, Astra and VUE Hybrid (2007) do not list GCWR.
Scion GCWR
Scion doesn’t care about trailers. GCWR data not available for 2006-2009 Scion tC, xA, xB and xD. These cars are stylish and designed for city driving. Leave the trailer at home.
Smart GCWR
2008 Smart Fortwo does not have GCWR listed. This is a small car. It can be carried by two people and can even hold a small bag. The car’s action is not linked to genes.
Subaru GCWR
Subaru specializes in four-wheel drive, but traction capacity varies depending on the transmission and body model. 2006 Subaru Legacy Wagon weighs 6,105 lbs. The Legacy Sedan weighs 6050 lbs. The Outback is slightly more expensive at $6,160.
In 2007, the Forester’s weight increased to 5,690 lbs. The weight of the old sedan rises to 6,120 lbs. Outback weight increases to 6,180 lbs.
The weight of the 2008 Tribeca (formerly the B9 Tribeca) has dropped from 7,805 pounds to 6,290 pounds. Legacy weight remains at 6,120 lbs. The Outback reaches 6,200 lbs.
As of 2009, the Forester does not have a listed GCWR, likely due to interior changes. The Legacy weighs 6,120 lbs. The Outback weighs 6,207 lbs. The Tribeca still weighs 6,290 pounds.

Suzuki GCWR
Suzuki’s XL7 SUV is a major player. He weighed 6,788 pounds in 2006, jumped to 7,536 pounds in 2007 and 2008, and disappeared in 2009.
From 2006 to 2008, the Grand Vitara ‘s weight remained stable at 6,602 pounds, but dropped in 2009. The Forenza Sedan weighs around 3,906 pounds. The Reno is around $3,895.
SX4 does not list 2007, 2008 or 2009 GCWR. Aerio and Equator also do not receive data. In 2006, the Verona weighed 4,530 pounds.
Toyota GCWR
Toyota’s numbers are strong. 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser weighs 12,400 lbs. A Sequoia weighs 12,000 lbs. Tundra Truck weighs 11,800 lbs.
In 2007, the Tundra weighed 10,000 lbs. Highlander Hybrid
Volkswagen heavy truck and cheap trailer
When we look at Volkswagen’s top models, the data becomes interesting. If you were planning on towing large items, your options were limited in the mid-2000s. The Touareg is the only car with a published GCWR. In 2006 the limit was £12,952. By 2007, its weight had dropped to 13,034 kilograms. The 2009 Touareg 2 now weighs 12,952 pounds.
All that jazz? Blank. No data available.
The silence said it all. This means that there is no standardized gross weight rating for the Golf, GTI, Jetta, Beetle, Passat, Phaeton, Rabbit and Eos. Why? The manufacturer may not recommend towing these vehicles. Alternatively, the weight limit may be so low that certain numbers are not justified in general consumer literature. You can tow a small trailer with the GTI, but you can’t drive it in the countryside.
The Tiguan and Routan were introduced for 2008 and 2009. The Routan is a minivan-based crossover with a GCWR of 6,771 pounds. The Tiguan is smaller and more compact, weighing 5,748 pounds. These figures are significantly lower than in the Touareg. They reflect the design of unibody crossovers and unladen SUVs. Thinking of towing a small utility trailer or a small powerboat? It’s not a boat. It’s not an RV.
Volvo’s practical limitations
Volvo does things differently. They publish information about almost everything. The numbers tell the limit of weight distribution and chassis strength.
In 2006, the XC90 was king with a GCWR of 8,694 pounds. The S80 and XC70 weigh around 7,100 kilograms. The S60 and V70 are both rated around 6,000 pounds. Prices for small cars (C70, S40, V50) are as low as 5,000 pounds. This makes sense. The S40 doesn’t tow your house on wheels.
Fast forward to 2009. The XC90’s GCWR dropped slightly to 8,476 lbs. The XC70’s weight remains stable at 7,549 pounds. The weight of the S80 increases to 7,425 lbs. Smaller models remain unchanged. The C30 and V50 weigh between 5,350 and 5,471 pounds.
Why did the XC90 fall? Engine upgrade? Do emission devices add weight? The vehicle weight of these cars continues to increase year by year.
