Kia has released initial images of the redesigned 2027 Seltos compact SUV, set to be fully unveiled on December 10th. The new model blends familiar SUV design elements with styling cues from Kia’s electric vehicle lineup, notably the EV5. This approach signals a broader shift in Kia’s design language, merging traditional and modern aesthetics.
Styling and Design Cues
The Seltos retains its upright, boxy shape and distinctive rear pillar styling while incorporating modern EV-inspired details. These include thin, angular taillights and flush door handles, creating a fresh yet recognizable look. Unique elements, such as integrated lighting within the grille, prevent it from being a simple EV5 clone. The headlights are also vertically oriented, aligning with recent Kia designs.
“The design blends the rugged heritage of past ICE SUVs with the clean, aerodynamic sophistication of Kia’s latest EVs,” Kia stated in a press release.
Hybrid Powertrain and Options
The next-generation Seltos will offer a hybrid powertrain, mirroring the system found in the Hyundai Kona Hybrid. This includes a 1.6-liter petrol engine paired with a 32kW electric motor, a 1.32kWh battery, and a six-speed automatic transmission delivering a combined output of 104kW and 265Nm. An electronic all-wheel drive (E-AWD) system will be optional.
Traditional petrol engines are also expected to continue, with the existing 2.0-liter and 1.6-liter turbocharged options likely to remain available. This ensures a broad range of choices for buyers, including those not yet ready to transition to hybrid technology.
Market Position and Lineup
The Seltos is a key model for Kia in many markets, including China, India, and the US. It replaces the current generation launched in 2019, which has been among Australia’s best-selling small SUVs. Kia will also offer distinctive trims such as X-Line and GT-Line alongside a wider range of exterior colors.
The Seltos’ existence within Kia’s broader lineup is notable given the presence of the Niro, which also includes hybrid and EV variants overlapping with the EV3. This highlights Kia’s strategic approach to filling multiple segments with closely related products.
The full reveal will be streamed on Kia’s YouTube channel. The new Seltos is expected to continue Kia’s success in the competitive small SUV market.
