Mercedes-Benz CLE Facelift Under Development: Spy Shots Reveal Early Changes

3

Mercedes-Benz is already preparing a mid-cycle refresh for its CLE model, just two and a half years after its initial release. Recent spy photos from Europe confirm development is underway, with test vehicles sporting light camouflage. The update is expected to align with the recently revised C-Class, featuring a bolder front-end design.

Exterior Updates: A More Aggressive Look

The most noticeable change visible in the spy shots is the new headlight design, which incorporates star-shaped elements. This signals a move towards a more prominent and assertive aesthetic, mirroring Mercedes’ recent design language. The front bumper and grille are also slated for updates; the grille appears taller, though the camouflage makes precise details difficult to confirm.

The rear of the vehicle will likely receive similar treatment with new taillights and a revised bumper. Beyond these changes, the overall body shape is expected to remain largely consistent with the current model.

Interior and Tech: AI-Powered Enhancements

While interior shots haven’t surfaced yet, updates are expected to be relatively minor. The existing 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 11.9-inch infotainment system will likely carry over, potentially upgraded with the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MBOS). This fourth-generation MBUX system heavily integrates artificial intelligence, including a new “living avatar” virtual assistant shaped like a Mercedes star.

Powertrain Options: Familiar Performance

Engine choices are expected to remain largely unchanged, though minor refinements are possible. The current CLE lineup includes:

  • A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 255 hp (190 kW / 259 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.
  • The CLE 450, equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine generating 375 hp (280 kW / 380 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm).
  • The CLE 53, featuring an upgraded inline-six engine that delivers 443 hp (330 kW / 449 PS) and 413 lb-ft (559 Nm), enabling 0-60 mph acceleration in around four seconds.

The decision to refresh the CLE so soon after launch underscores the competitive pressure in the luxury coupe segment, where automakers frequently update designs to stay relevant. The move also reflects Mercedes’ broader design shift towards more assertive and technologically advanced vehicles.
