Bentley Scales Back EV Plans: Hybrids and Gas Engines Remain Key

13

Bentley’s transition to electric vehicles is slowing down. While the company’s first fully electric model remains on track for a 2027 launch, future EV development is now delayed until at least 2030, according to CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser. This shift comes as Volkswagen Group abandons its planned Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) – the foundation for multiple Bentley EVs, including a potential electric sedan – deeming it unviable.

Financial Performance and Strategy Shift

Despite a 5% dip in deliveries compared to 2024, Bentley reported a seventh consecutive year of profitability in 2025. However, this success isn’t driving a full-throttle push into EVs. Instead, Bentley will continue to leverage the VW Group’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) for its initial EV, ensuring its 2027 launch isn’t affected. The PPE platform already supports models like the Porsche Cayenne EV, providing a stable technological base.

Hybrid and Gas Power Revival

The bigger change is Bentley’s renewed commitment to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and internal combustion engines (ICE). The next generation of Bentley vehicles will feature PHEV powertrains, mirroring the recent conversions of the Continental GT and Flying Spur. Notably, customer demand for traditional gas-powered models has surged, prompting Bentley to explore exclusive, ICE-only offerings.

Bentayga’s Future

The Bentayga, Bentley’s best-selling model, will also see a PHEV upgrade in its next generation, though details remain undisclosed. The current Bentayga is aging but remains popular, boosted by the recent high-performance Speed variant. A full redesign isn’t expected until at least 2028.

Charging Ambitions

Bentley aims for its first EV to gain 100 miles of range in just seven minutes of charging. The company has ruled out retrofitting existing models with electric or hybrid drivetrains, stating it’s “not feasible” and not part of their long-term strategy.

This strategic pivot reflects broader industry trends, with automakers reassessing EV timelines amid infrastructure challenges and shifting consumer preferences. Bentley’s decision to prioritize hybrids and ICE vehicles alongside its limited EV rollout ensures a smoother transition while meeting current market demand.
